Founders building for scientists sometimes want the brand to shout — bold gradients, saturated accents, personality everywhere. I push back, and here's the reasoning. In expert research software, color isn't decoration; it's data encoding. The moment you spend red on a button, you've made it harder for a significance flag, an error state, or a heat-mapped value to mean anything. Power users read these tools for hours, often comparing subtle differences across huge datasets, so a calm, low-chroma canvas is what lets meaningful color carry signal. My rule for founders: reserve your strongest, most saturated colors for the data layer and critical states, and let the interface itself recede. That discipline also protects you on accessibility — color-blind-safe palettes and WCAG contrast aren't constraints you bolt on later, they're how you avoid encoding meaning that a chunk of your serious users literally cannot perceive. There's a trust dimension too. Restraint reads as competence to a senior researcher; a circus of color reads as a consumer toy. The brand still lives — in voice, in craft, in the few deliberate accents you do spend. But in a tool people stake their work on, color psychology means earning attention, not demanding it.
