Typography Is Your Roadmap, Rendered
Product managers often think of typography as polish for the end of the cycle. In data-heavy research tools, it's actually a roadmap decision. Scientists and senior researchers scan before they read — they're hunting for the one significant value in a thousand-row result set. Type scale, weight, and spacing are how you tell them what matters. When I set visual hierarchy for these interfaces, I'm encoding the product's priorities: which column is the answer, which metadata is supporting, which controls are primary actions versus escape hatches. Get it wrong and your power users slow down, second-guess the data, and lose trust in the tool. From a PM's seat, this is where hierarchy ties directly to your metrics — task completion, time-to-insight, and how confidently someone acts on a query. I push for tabular figures so numbers align and compare cleanly, restrained weight contrast so emphasis stays meaningful, and generous line length control so dense text stays legible. Hierarchy also keeps localization honest: if structure depends on font tricks rather than real semantics, i18n breaks it. Treating typography as an early hierarchy conversation, not a late visual one, is one of the cheapest ways to improve a research product's usability.
